π Plot Summary
In a Hutsul village in the Carpathian Mountains, Ivan loves Marichka, the daughter of the man who killed his father. While Ivan is away earning money for their future, Marichka accidentally drowns trying to save a lamb.
Heartbroken, Ivan later marries Palahna, but he cannot forget Marichka. Their marriage fails as Palahna turns to a local molfar, Yurko, and Ivan begins having visions.
After a confrontation, Ivan is struck down and wanders into the forest, where he sees Marichkaβs spirit. Reaching toward her, he cries out and dies. The village gives him a traditional Hutsul burial.
